Frankenstorm Sandy headed our way!

So as if things aren't crazy enough... we've got a storm/hurricane of "historic precedents" headed our way.

I think we're as prepared as we're going to be. Backyard items tied down/put away. Bottled water. Probably 3-4 days of non-perishables... or at least until food choices start to get weird. Basement prepared for the leakage we have when it rains hard. Lots of flashlights & batteries. Will fill the bathtub tonight for washing/misc use water.

Other than that... we'll just have to see what happens :/

Once the worry of initial storm is over... then it'll be handling the power outage. Haven't heard good things about this area in getting power turned back on... I've heard stuff like a week to 11 days... YIKES.

Here goes nothing!

*Sigh* Where HAVE I been???

Apparently NOT on the computer ;)

It's been one heck of an October thus far. Lots of doctor appts for Mr. Lukey, trying to figure out what's going on with his GI issues. Then Greg was gone for THREE weeks to three different locations for work. One weekend we spent celebrating Jake's SIXTH birthday!! Now that the computer is in the basement (in the office\playroom)... it's really hard for me to get down here and do the things I need to do on the computer! I'm way behind!

I still have to show you the updated paint job on the house! Jake's birthday! And the blog turned FOUR years old last week too! Oy!

Landscaping! Out with the old, in with the new!

After we cleared the backyard and the kids had a place to play we shifted our focus to the front of the house.

Here it was when we bought it...

The home inspection it was found that the roots of the massive holly trees were starting to grow into the foundation. No damage yet, but soon could be. So out they came! Went ahead and removed all the front "landscaping" as well. There wasn't much too it, either overgrown or extremely scraggly.

Here it is as a "clean slate"...

Then we met with a couple of landscapers from local nurseries. They presented us with their ideas. We decided on one and got it scheduled! We went with low maintenance things of course ;)

To save on money we had them only plant the big stuff, then we planted the little stuff.

All done!

Over a month later and I can tell you that besides the Japanese Maple, these three stepping stones are my favorite thing! We use them all the time!

Next up... the house gets painted (oh wait, technically next was a new driveway THEN paint).

H Family Backyard "clearing"

We've done lots to the house since we moved in! Thought I'd do a bit of a summary post of it all. I wavered on breaking it down into a few posts or just into one. Decided to just show it in pieces as it was done.

First we had the backyard cleared out of underbrush & any tree under 3" in diameter. Then the back that's covered with leaves & twigs was "mulched"... made for a cleaner play space and when it's wet it's not as messy as straight up dirt. We have some major trees back there with quite a canopy that shades most of the backyard (so only the front 10 ft of the backyard has grass). Not sure what our plan is for next spring/summer (have all winter to brainstorm). But glad to have it cleared out for now so the boys can play and all the thorns & poison ivy is gone!

Backyard before and afters (just ignore all the other randomly placed items/kids)...

Left side before
Left side after - whoa - space!

A Jedi in the Jungle (center before)

Center - In front of deck before

Center after (found a bunch of large rocks in the ground!)
Right Side before

Right Side after
Hauling away all the stuff they cleaned out!

We probably won't invest too much back there, but still have a couple ideas for out back. Definitely a firepit! I wanted a rope swing, but all our trees are so tall, there's no limb to try a swing from until 20 ft up, no that's a no-go. I was out back with them yesterday and with the leaves starting to fall, I noticed our neighbor (with two highschool kids) has one of those wooden playsets/forts in their backyard looking pretty neglected. I'm going to try to work up some nerve to approach her sometime and see if she's willing to sell it to us. Looks pretty worn (so hopefully could get at good price since the new ones are $$$), but I'm sure it'd be great for the two years we'll be here... and talk about an easy transport! I never see this lady though, she's one that drives her car into the garage and lowers the door immediately. Hmmm... this is how I get myself into awkward situations! Let's see what I come up with ;)

Manassas Battefield - H Fam Sight Seeing Part 5

A few weeks ago Greg's parents came to visit! It was a great few days! They got to see Jake get on and off the bus. They watched the boys so Greg & I could have date night and go to a Metric concert. We also did some sightseeing of course! :)

On Friday, once we got Jake on the bus we took off to the Manassas National Battefield Park where "Southern Victories tested Northern Resolve".

We followed the one mile Battle of First Manassas (First Bull Run) walking tour. It was really interesting. I honestly don't know as much as I should about the Civil War... so many battles, generals, battlefields, etc... I don't know how the buffs keep it all straight! It's amazing to see the battlefield pretty up set up as it may of looked that day.

The house caught in the middle of the battle

Greg & Evan at one of the Northern Cannon Lines

Me & Evan walking ahead

Grandpa pushing Luke in the stroller & Greg on the path to come around to where the tide of the battle changes

Evan snacking on apple & apple juice in the tall grasses

Brothers checking out the cannon

Lil man walked the whole Southern Cannon Line... where/when "Stonewall" Jackson received that nickname. "Form, Form, there stands Jackson like a stone wall! Rally behind the Virginians!"

34 years old & a new computer to boot!

Not that I've been great at posting lately... however, ran into a huge snag. My laptop went belly up! I guess it's bound to happen, it's 5 years old. Hard to believe how "disposable" technology is these days. Doesn't feel right.

However, such a huge chunk of everything we do involves the computer. So I think that may of been my birthday present? Nothing fancy. Didn't even get a laptop. Our desktop went belly up when we moved here (7 years old) so we were using my laptop as the main computer. We just got another tower since our monitor & keyboard were relatively new.

BUT none of my stuff has been transferred over from my laptop yet. So I don't have much to show at the moment. There's lots I just need to put together & whip up into some posts... landscaping, the house painted, etc...

Today is my birthday. 34 years old. Hmmm... I'm not cringing over it, but I'm not bouncing off the walls with excitement either. It just is what it is. Greg has been gone since Sat traveling for work and will be home next Saturday. So it's just me & the boys... and they're let's say a little underwhelmed that it's my birthday. They're more bummed that it's not theirs! LOL!

Grabbed a carrot cake when the younger 2 and I went grocery shopping this morning. We'll probably grab some take out for dinner, and "celebrate" :)
